Four Overclocked RADEON HD 3650/3850/3870 Graphics Cards

HIS IceQ RADEON HD 3650 Turbo 512MB, HIS IceQ III RADEON HD 3870 Turbo 512MB, MSI RADEON HD 3850 OC 256MB, PowerColor RADEON HD 3650 Extreme 512MB

Like most people neither wear designer clothes nor live in villas, most users cannot afford expensive powerful graphics cards like GeForce 8800GTX or RADEON HD 3870 X2 and choose cheaper solutions instead. So, this time we are going to review three Mid-End graphics cards of the $100-$180 price range and a more expensive HD 3870. All our contenders today are based on AMD (ATI) RADEON GPUs.

At the same time, our readers will get to know not only production-line HD 3850/3870 cards, but also the HD 3650. The latter card is essentially the RADEON 2600 PRO/XT. Everything is the same: architecture (120 streaming processors, 128-bit bus), similar design. And its frequencies are in between those of the 2600 PRO and the 2600 XT. That is the HD 3650 is actually a hybrid of the 2600 PRO and the 2600 XT. Why launch this product and give it a new name?

The fact is, the RV630 core, used in the RADEON 2600 cards, is manufactured by the 65-nm fabrication process. AMD wanted to squeeze maximum performance from this product, so it operated at very high frequencies and dissipated much heat. Having manufactured the RV635-based counterpart by the 55-nm fabrication process, AMD kills two birds with one stone: it reduces manufacturing costs of such GPUs and heat dissipation, preserving the operating frequency in between the 2600 PRO (600 MHz) and the 2600 XT (800 MHz), at about 725 MHz. If these are only domestic transformations in AMD that have to do with their requirements and needs, why do they offer the old product as a new card? Because no marketing department will miss an opportunity to advertise an old product, if there is an excuse—an updated GPU. We've already seen such methods. So users shouldn't be surprised.

Thus, all our readers must understand that the RADEON 3650 is a cross between the RADEON 2600 PRO and the RADEON 2600 XT in its performance. There are no other differences. We'll test this assumption below.

Top 3 AMD Laptops Under Rs. 40,000

Top 3 AMD Laptops Under Rs. 40,000

Laptops today have reached price points where they have become as affordable as desktops and offer fairly decent performance. In our previous budget-based roundups, we have only considered Intel based offerings ranging from the budget Celeron series of processors to the more powerful Core2duo series. In this roundup we will focus purely on AMD based laptops, as a lot of the lower AMD mobile processor series now offer excellent VFM. Not only are these cost effective, they are far more powerful compared to Intel’s offerings in the budget range. They are also 64-bit ready and hence offer some degree of future readiness.

Here is our pick of the 3 best AMD powered laptops money can buy under Rs. 40,000.

Acer 5101ANWLMi

Acer for a long time now has been the undisputed price vs. performance leader in the budget laptop market. They offer some excellent laptops in the categories ranging from the very entry-level Rs. 25,000 to the competitive budget level Rs. 40,000 price points. The Acer 5101ANWLMI is one such model.

The 5101 is based on the AMD Turion 64 MK-36 processor series. The AMD budget mobile offering, which runs at 2.0 GHz, is a single core processor and takes only 31 TDP (total power consumption in terms of wattage). This is a great processor with low power consumption, and being a 64-bit chip it will allow a user to easily upgrade to a 64-bit OS. While 64-bit OS have yet to become mainstream, we expect that with the launch of Vista they will completely replace the 32-bit OS prevalent today.

In other system specifications, the 5101ANWLMi comes with a default 512 MB of RAM,a 60 GB HDD, a 15-inch LCD with a native resolution of 1280x800, an 8x dual-layer DVD-RAM drive, a Radeon 1100 Graphics chipset which takes 256 MB of system ram for video operations and has a Broadcom Wi-Fi chip that has support for 802.11B/G. Sound is handled by a Realtek HDA sound-chip which offers excellent audio playback. In terms of peripheral connectivity, the 5101ANWLMi offers is well equipped for a budget laptop as it offers 3 USB slots, a VGA port, a Firewire port and a 5 in 1 memory card reader with support for SD/MMC/MS/MS-Pro/XD Cards. The OS shipped with this laptop is normally Linux.

Acer offers a Targus bag as a carry-case for the laptop apart from the standard collection of power cables. In terms of battery life, the 5101ANWLMI offers around roughly 2 ½ hrs to 3 hours, which is exceptionally good even when compared to its Intel–based rivals.

All in all the 5101ANWLMi has some very good system specifications. Keeping this in mind and considering its price point at Rs. 33,500, its great battery life, the 64-bit AMD processor and the fact that Acer offers a free Targus bag worth Rs. 2,500 for free, the 5101ANWLMi should be among the top contenders on anyone’s list of budget laptops.

Our only recommendation; should you choose to go for this laptop, get at least 1 GB of RAM. This will add an additional cost of Rs. 2,750 to your budget but will give you increased functionality and will further increase the laptop’s readiness for the future. The laptop is available with Skygate for Rs. 33,500 for the base model.

Google Is Ditching Intel And Going To AMD

Google Is Ditching Intel And Going To AMD

Google has been and will continue buying AMD products over Intel. Google currently owns 200,000 servers and AMD could start to see a lot of business from Google as they continue to expand or need to replace/upgrade the existing servers. The funniest part is that Intel’s Chief Executive is on Google’s board. It looks as though AMD continues to get more and more of Intel’s market.

AMD unveiled a new family of AMD Xilleon™ panel processors designed to provide unrivaled visual quality in LCD digital TVs. AMD’s new panel processors deliver advanced motion compensation and frame rate conversion technology for excellent image processing, resulting in a rich, immersive entertainment experience.

AMD is committed to helping manufacturers deliver crystal clear ‘20/20 television’ to a growing mainstream market of digital TV consumers worldwide, enabling The Ultimate Visual Experience.™ AMD is driving innovation and design efficiencies with outstanding technology in highly integrated, flexible AMD Xilleon processor solutions, which now span from TV motherboards to display panels.

As consumers demand larger TVs with greater clarity, picture defects such as blurred motion or “film judder” can detract from the viewing experience and leave consumers dissatisfied. This trend toward larger TVs, coupled with the global transition to digital TV broadcasts starting with the U.S. in early 2009, has significantly increased the importance of DTV visual quality.

AMD Xilleon™ panel processors offer motion compensation and frame rate conversion based on AMD’s enhanced phase-plane correlation technology to help TV manufacturers deliver a superior picture. AMD’s state-of-the-art technology supports high-quality visual processing for 100Hz/120Hz LCD TVs up to full HD (1080p) resolution.
